Referee Clinic At Shenandale

On Saturday, Feb 20th, I had an excellent time at the Shenandale Gun Club, teaching a referee clinic to 20 skeet shooters, board members, and get this, sporting clays shooters! It seems several of the skeet members have been tossing around ideas to help lower the costs of registered shoots. And since the skeet shooters volunteer their time for sporting clays matches, they asked some sporting clays shooters if they would reciprocate by reffing skeet shoots for free. So Denny Snyder invited me up to their club to conduct a clinic, go over the referee exam together, then have a nice chili and cornbread lunch. Who could say no to an offer like that?!

Right now, registered shoot costs have risen to $38 per gun at Shenandale, along with most other clubs in Virginia. This year, they're lowering the costs to $32 per gun at the Page Kable shoot by using volunteer refs. Plus, they've even been in discussions with potential commercial and private sponsors, to try and cut costs even further, to help their shoots grow back up to the number of entries they once enjoyed. And if this works as planned, they may be holding more registered shoots per year in the near future, perhaps even this season! What a great plan, especially since we’ve all seen shoots declining in participation year after year!

I was thrilled to be a part of this initiative, I hope everything works out for Shenandale as planned, and they can count on me shooting the Page Kable and any other shoots they manage to host in the future. I also hope the idea of non-paid referees catches on at other clubs. Below is a photo of all 20 participants who are now certified skeet referees. Congratulations to everyone, and thank you Denny and others who put this clinic together.

Shenandale, I’ll see you at your next shoot!  -Lane Hartle

Prayer Request

In case you all haven’t heard already or seen on Facebook, Laura Key was seriously injured in a fall last night.  She is scheduled for surgery this evening at 7pm, to reset her nose, fix a broken jaw, and several other issues.  I posted a message on our Facebook page to let everyone know that the Feb 14th fun shoot has been cancelled, so that Kevin and Laura can have some down time.  Please help by spreading the word about the fun shoot cancellation.

And please keep Kevin and Laura in your prayers…  -Lane Hartle
