Virginia Open at Fairfax


The Virginia Open will be held April 22-24 at the Fairfax Gun Club. As always, if you are interested in shooting, please pre-register with Buddy Baker via email at or call him at 703-491-7427. First come get the rotations they want. If you're interested in reffing, please let Buddy know, he is already in need of refs.

Paul Giambrone III, 15 time world champion, will be in the area conducting clinics and wants to shoot doubles on Friday, plus 20 and 12 on Sat with us (targets only, not competing), and will give a FREE doubles demonstration/lesson after Doubles shoot offs.

Halifax Poke Chop Open 2016


Two shoots!  One weekend!  The Halifax County Gun Club invites everyone to attend their famous Poke Chop Open Shoots on April 7-10, 2016.  The first shoot is the Saturday Poke Chop Open, which starts with the 20 gauge event on Thursday after 3:00pm, then continues on Friday after 12:00pm, then…  Awww hell, just look at the attached flyer, they explain it better than I can.  Dinner on Saturday night is... well…

Sunday’s Poke Chop Open begins on Saturday with the 12 gauge event, filling in on whatever squads are available, and continues on Sunday at 9:00, 10:30 and 12:00.  The 20 gauge event will be shot at 1:30, 3:00 and 4:30, followed by shoot-offs.  Again, read the flyer for rotations, they made this stuff up, not me!! :)

Passing of Melvin Johnson


The officers and staff of the Virginia Skeet Shooting Association are very saddened to report the loss of Melvin Johnson. Mel was a very good personal friend of mine, having had many conversations with him at skeet tournaments over the years. His Virginia skeet family will miss him dearly.

Melvin P. Johnson, 74, of King George passed away on Wednesday, March 9, 2016.  Born in Alexandria, Virginia, he retired as a machinist. Melvin was an avid skeet shooter, and loved to spend time with his family and vacationing in Florida.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn Johnson; a brother Carl Johnson of Woodford; son Chris Johnson (Jenny); daughter Melissa; 4 grandchildren Destiny, Hunter, Cody and Nathan all of whom reside in King George.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tues. March 15 at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George.

Interment will be private.

George Mason Open

The Fairfax Rod & Gun Club will be hosting the annual George Mason Open on Saturday, March 19th. This is a 2-gun, 20 and 12 gauge shoot, with two rotations shot in the morning, and two rotations in the afternoon. Come on out and support the GMU shooting teams.
