Passing of Chris Isley

It is with a heavy heart that the Brushy Mountain Club shares the loss of Chris Isley with our VSSA family. Chris passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon, March 27, 2020, while enjoying a beautiful afternoon at the club with friends. Chris enjoyed sharing his passion of shooting sports and was an outstanding referee. Many would remember Chris pulling targets for them at Brushy Mountain, Halifax, Arrowhead, the State Shoots and other clubs throughout Virginia.

Update: Chris’ wife, Nancy, has shared that a memorial service will be held at a later date when friends can gather in memory of Chris. She also asked that we share her address for cards of condolence, please address to:

Coronavirus Guidance

As the situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve, VSSA members and clubs are facing decisions about holding planned events. In concert with recent guidance from the NSSA, the VSSA encourages shooters and club management to monitor their local news and consider guidance from medical experts and local authorities regarding recommended precautions. We will keep you updated here on with any shoot schedule changes as we receive them from shoot managers.

At this time, the only schedule change we are aware of is the cancellation of the Halifax Poke Chop Open, which was scheduled for April 16-19.

In order to help us spread the word regarding schedule changes or cancellations, we are asking shoot managers to please contact Hannah Goddard ( and Lane Hartle ( as soon as possible with any necessary changes, in addition to following your normal procedures.

The 5-Man Team Fun Shoot was held last Sunday, and it’s great to have this shoot back in the schedule again. Thanks to Kevin and Laura for all the hard work. And now it’s time to start advertising some of the upcoming shoots for the regular season.

Passing of Billy Brockman

The officers and staff of the VSSA are very saddened to report the passing of Billy Brockman. Billy was an outstanding referee and sportsman.  He and his wife Jackie were common fixtures at countless skeet shoots for the past several decades.

William Elwood (Billy) Brockman, Jr., 80 of Gordonsville, passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at VCU Hospital in Richmond. Born April 23, 1939 in Orange, he was the son of the late William Elwood Brockman, Sr. and Olivia Williams Brockman. Billy was retired from Liberty Fabrics and he continued working as a mechanic at several local businesses including Shaffer Motor Co, Piedmont Power and Cycle Solutions. He was a member of the Piedmont Sportsman Club and he loved to referee at skeet shoots all over.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday March 6, 2020 at Preddy Funeral Home in Gordonsville with Pastor Dwane Pugh officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
