Passing of Mo Mozisek

The officers and staff of the Virginia Skeet Shooting Association are very saddened to report the loss of James “Mo” Mozisek. James “Mo” Mozisek, age 80, passed away peacefully on the morning of July 25 at Manassas Health and Rehabilitation under the care of Vitas Hospice. He died from complications from a traumatic brain injury he suffered from a fall at his home in Luray, Virginia, April 28th. He fought and worked hard, much like he did his whole life, for 86 days to recover but the damage from his brain injury was significant and medically complex. He was born on September 27, 1937 in Shiner, Texas to Rudolph and Caroline (Dornak) Mozisek. He was the eldest of five sons.

After graduating Shiner High School in 1956, James joined the Air Force in 1957. His service as part of the Security Police Division brought him to the Pentagon in Washington, DC in 1964 where he met his wife Barbara Phillips and married on June 4th of 1966 in Framingham, Massachusetts. After being stationed in Turkey and domestically the couple resided in Dale City, Virginia. In 1978 he retired from the Air Force as a trained locksmith at the rank of Master Sargent. He ended his career as a locksmith at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C. After 15 years of service in this position the couple retired to Luray, Virginia in 1993. This was a location they found while enjoying Mo’s hobby of skeet shooting during visits to the Page Valley Sportsman's Club. Mo was a avid trap and skeet shooter as well as a deer hunter. For many years he spent deer seasons in Shiner, Texas hunting with his brother Ben and spending time with family and friends in his treasured hometown. Until his accident, Mo worked as a part-time locksmith and owner of Luray Lock and Key.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Barbara; daughters Jo Linda (David) Rowe and Theresa Foster and grandchildren; Emily Lawrence and Logan and Ethan Rowe; and brothers Joseph (Florine), Patrick and Benjamin (Beverly) Mozisek.

The family will greet friends from 1-2 pm Thursday, August 2 before a formal service celebrating his life at 2:00pm at the Bradley Funeral Home, 187 East Main Street, Luray, Virginia 22835. There will be a private burial at Culpeper National Cemetery on Friday, August 3.

Arlington-Fairfax Doubles Marathon

Last year, NSSA established new World Record events for 400 or 500 targets events shot in one or two days within the same gauge (see article below from the February 2017 Clay Target Nation). There are 10 new categories for shooters to post a World Record 400 or 500 in 12, 20, 28 , .410, and doubles. The Arlington-Fairfax IWLA in Centreville, VA, is hosting the first 500-target doubles event in the Mid-Atlantic region on August 4th. This is a great chance to post a score for the newly established NSSA 500 target world record.

Don't want to shoot 500 targets in one day? No problem! They are also running four separate 100-target doubles events on the same day. Shoot as much or as little as you like. This is a great time to tune up your doubles before the state shoot or even get those extra doubles for NSSA minimums.

A complimentary lunch will be provided, including hamburgers, hotdogs, cole slaw and potato salad. For more information, contact Ashly Palles at Click HERE to see the flyer for this shoot.

State Shoot Registration Update

Shooters, the 2018 State Shoot is right around the corner. Be on the lookout for confirmations of your 2018 State Shoot registration, e-mails were sent out Wednesday, July 18th. Please review these carefully. State Shoot program booklets have just arrived and will be mailed out to all registered shooters. These should be arriving in your mailbox sometime next week.

Before coming to Arrowhead, please remember the following:

1.  Make sure your 2018 NSSA membership has been paid.
2.  Make sure you bring your average card WITH UP TO DATE AVERAGES.
3. If you need to print out anything from NSSA, please do so before leaving home. Remember there is very limited internet service at Arrowhead, and we cannot just look up your averages for you.

There is still room for 4 gun and single gun shooters. Contact me as soon as possible to register. The best way to contact me is via e-mail at

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Arrowhead!  -Tonda Finney

Milton Mills Memorial Awards & Benefits

For those of you who didn’t have the opportunity to meet Milton Mills, he was an excellent shooter from Arrowhead who passed away in 2013. Over the years, he won numerous gun championships across the state, and in 2000 was the Virginia State HOA champion with a 398. For his many shooting accomplishments, he was elected to the VSSA Hall of Fame in 2011.

This year, Milton’s family is honoring his legacy with several awards and benefits for our junior and sub-junior shooters. At the Firecracker 400 Open this weekend at Arrowhead, all junior and sub-junior shooters will have their entry fees paid for the doubles and either the 12 gauge or the 20 gauge (targets only). A special cash award of $150 will also be split between the junior champ/runner-up in the doubles, and another $150 split between the sub-junior doubles champ/runner-up.

In addition, the Mills family will be covering the 12 gauge and doubles entry fees (targets only) for all junior and sub-junior shooters at the 2018 State Shoot at Arrowhead, and cash awards of $150 will be split between the junior doubles champ/runner-up and $150 for the sub-junior doubles champ/runner-up.
