Urgent Call for Referees

Greetings everyone. As you may have read in Becky’s President’s Message, we have a serious need for new referees in our sport. Since I started shooting in Virginia in 1999, I’ve watched many junior, collegiate, and triple-sub shooters become active in skeet shooting. Unfortunately, very few have remained interested, and of those who are still shooting, even fewer have offered to assist with referee duties. Like Becky said, most of us older shooters got our start in skeet by refereeing, to help offset the cost of shooting. With the decline in the number of active shooters today, plus the number of aging referees who can no longer work the long hours they once did, we now need our younger shooters to step up and become referees. It’s time to start planning now, to replace those referees who have supported all of us for so many years.

I am currently working with Jeff Bond to hold a referee clinic at the Fairfax Gun Club. Tentatively scheduled for Sunday, March 4th, I invite all shooters, especially our younger shooters, to attend and learn what it takes to be a good skeet referee. Please consider bringing a friend, too.  We will start by going over the referee exam together, discussing each question as a group, and finally filling out the NSSA referee application. All Virginia shooters are counting on your support. Plus, I need new referees if I’m going to continue to help Becky and Judy run our state shoot each year. I hope as many of you as possible can attend this clinic. Stay tuned for updates as Jeff and I finalize our plans for this clinic.

I also plan to have a similar referee clinic at Conservation Park, at a date yet to be determined, before the nice weather gets here and we’re all busy attending shoots. I’ve already held very successful clinics at Middlesex and Shenandale, and certified over 30 new referees in the past two years. If any skeet directors or shoot managers at other Virginia clubs would like to host a clinic, please feel free to contact me so we can start making plans now.

For many years, NSSA has used the advertising slogan “youth is the future of our sport”, but that applies to all aspects of skeet, besides just shooting and competing. Please consider the contribution you can make to the future of skeet in Virginia by becoming a referee. All of us are counting on your support...
